[After parting from Edgar's company, a pensive Terra heads back to camp. Her good mood about the dragons is overshadowed by strife between those dearest to her. Even if she can't make them get along, it's not something she can ignore.

Hence, finding Kain. First the camp, then the surrounding area if he's hunting for Zephyr. For once, she's not content to wait behind.]

[Kain is indeed hunting, and he's got Zephyr with him. He's playing his motherly role well, showing her how he strikes at creatures and letting her 'help' him where she can. He's really doing most of the work, but she's getting a lot of good practice even by watching.]

Good... you're going to be the fiercest dragon in the entire world someday...

[Upon spotting them, Terra pauses to observe for just a moment. She can't help but be touched at their bond, hoping it will influence Kain for the better. Still, there's too much on her mind to just stand there for more than a moment. She approaches, a small smile on her face.]

She will be, I'm sure....

[Kain looks at Zephyr fondly as she tears into her food. Then he glances at Terra.]

She's doing so well... I'm proud of her.

[She nods quickly to that.]

So am I. She'll be a strong dragon, one day.

...we need to talk.

[Uh oh... What did he even do? Kain is always one to jump to a feeling of guilt without knowing what it's even for. He frowns slightly, continuing to watch Zephyr eat.]

About what?

About Edgar.

[She tries to think of a good way to ease into that topic, but can't. Hence, the blunt approach.]

He's leaving soon...for somewhere else. He said he doesn't feel welcome.

[Kain tenses and looks unamused at the mention of his name. It figures that the man was talking with Terra, giving her ideas about Kain not being good enough for her.]

So he's also told you I'm not worthy of you, is that it?

[She sighs and shakes her head.]

No, he didn't.

...do you really think he wants to steal me?

Isn't it obvious that's his intention?

[Yes, Kain really is that paranoid and jealous. But this is his first actual relationship, and the first time he's ever felt it threatened somehow. Even if that threat is in his own mind. He doesn't really know how to proceed.]

[Terra frowns softly.]

No, I don't think so. He's been a good friend to me, but that's all.

Besides, he can't 'steal' me. I'm capable of making up my own mind...and I already did.

[In case Kain forgot.]

[...oh. Now he feels guilty. Of course she has the ability to make her own decisions.]

I know you can... Forgive me. I didn't mean to imply otherwise.

[Her frown eases as she steps in closer, taking hold of his hand in both her own.]

I can't make you two get along, though I wish you could see there's no reason to worry. I care about you both, but what I feel for him isn't anything like what I feel for you...and it never will be.

...It means a lot to hear you say that...

[Kain squeezes her hands reassuringly, he's glad that this won't ruin anything, somehow. Since the talk and confrontation with Edgar he's been uneasy.]

...He doesn't approve of me. He made his feelings clear.

That's...probably my fault. When you died and I...[She trails off, not able to speak about that horrible time.]...it must have affected him.

[Kain looks down sadly at that, not liking to have her think about it either.]

...you know I didn't want that outcome. I thought I was strong enough to push through it.

...but you weren't. I'm not saying that as a slight against you, but some things can't be overcome by sheer stubbornness. Sometimes, you need to let people help you.

[Kain turns to the side and looks away, ashamed that he was so weak.]

...I'm not very good at that.

[Terra sighs, resting her hand on his shoulder.]

I know, but it would mean a lot to me if you keep trying. And I'll always do whatever I can to help you, you know that.

Besides, it's not just us anymore. You have to think of Zephyr, too. She needs you.

I know... you both do... and I love you both. I want to be strong for the two of you...

[Men of Baron are never weak. Highwinds are never weak.]

[Except when they're dead.]

We can all be strong together; if we support each other, then it will be easier on all of us.

[Oh, right. That does get in the way of things, a lot.]

...Supporting one another... like when you fight with comrades in battle...

[She nods encouragingly.]

Yes, only outside of battle, too. You just have to extend it a bit.

I'll try... [Kain makes an uncomfortable expression.] But I don't trust many people. I trust you, of course... and my comrades from home and the war...

[But even then, he's always had a thing for keeping his distance a little too much.]

There are others, I promise that. And it's been really hard for me to trust people, too, you know. I've always been afraid of how someone would react once they knew what I was...whether out of fear or greed.

I understand why you feel that way. [More reassuring squeezes at that.] ...Then... I suppose someone you trust is worth trusting...

[As to whether he'll be able to LIKE everyone she trusts, that's another matter entirely.]
